Overview

Dope Gans was an early generative AI art collection created in 2021 using Google VQGAN+CLIP, before modern image-generation platforms became mainstream.

The collection explored how text prompts, machine interpretation, visual selection, color, texture, and surreal imagery could be shaped into a cohesive body of work.

Context

This project shows that my interest in generative AI was not a recent response to hype. I was already experimenting with creative machine-learning tools during an earlier, rougher, less accessible stage of the technology.

Selected Artifacts

Curated source material from the project, selected for visual strength, brand signal, and how clearly it supports the world.

Early-model texture and hallucinated detail.
Machine interpretation shaped by human selection.
Surreal composition before the tools became polished.
Rough edges kept as part of the period evidence.
Collection curation over single-output novelty.
A 2021 marker of creative AI experimentation.

My Role

  • - Explored prompt development and visual iteration using early generative AI tooling.
  • - Curated machine-generated imagery into a cohesive visual direction.
  • - Built an archive of surreal, texture-heavy experiments shaped by human selection and taste.

Process

  1. 01Experiment with early text-to-image generation.
  2. 02Select outputs based on composition, color, texture, and emotional charge.
  3. 03Shape individual experiments into a collection with a recognizable visual mood.
  4. 04Treat machine output as raw material for human direction.

What I Learned

  • - Early AI art rewarded patience, curation, and willingness to work with strange outputs.
  • - Prompting alone was not enough; selection and sequencing created the body of work.
  • - Creative technology becomes more interesting when the artist keeps making decisions.
